Here’s a survival kit to survive a summer wedding in Portugal!

Weather in August

covilha_average_temperaturecovilha_average_rainfall

In Unhais da Serra in Augustus the temperature will be around 30C / 85F, with peaks possibly well in the 40C / 100F. So please bring:

  • Sunscreen / sun block
  • Sun glasses
  • A hat or cap
  • Light clothes, something with a little jacket that you can take off
  • (Refillable) bottle of water

On top of that it usually cools down quite a bit at night (into the 15C / 55F) so bring a light jacket or vest to cool down outside at night.

Time in Portugal

Bear in mind that Portugal is one hour behind Central European Time (CET). Please see the world clock in the side bar. Our wedding starts at 4pm Portuguese time!

What to do around Unhais da Serra

  • Drive / hike through the parque natural Serra da Estrela
  • Taste the one and only Queijo Fresco
  • Visit Covilha

Tolls, tolls, tolls!!

It’s not easy to drive around Portugal by car! For starters there are regular toll booths everywhere that require cash or credit card. On top of that in 2012 they have introduced electronic toll portals on the main highways which require prepayment, so you will need to plan this ahead of time. Note: you cannot pay these on the spot!

If you rent a car you can ask the rental company if the car includes a “via verde” transponder, in that case the tolls are charged through the rental company to you.

If you use your own car, you’ll have two options:

  1. Using a special machine at the border you can link you license plate to your credit card.
  2. You can buy a prepaid toll card using this link or at the border. Note: the card needs to be activated by SMS!
